Kole South MP Peter Ocen Appeals to Teachers to End Nationwide Strike
KOLE, UGANDA — The Kole South Member of Parliament, Peter Ocen Akalo, has made a heartfelt plea to teachers in Kole to end the ongoing nationwide teachers' strike, emphasizing the importance of stability in the educational system for the future of the children.
During a recent event at Omuge Primary School in Bala Town Council, where he presided over the dedication prayers for PLE (Primary Leaving Examinations) candidates, MP Ocen passionately urged teachers to return to classrooms. He humbly knelt before the teachers, reminiscent of traditional gestures of respect and humility in African cultures, appealing for their return to teaching for the benefit of the nation’s children.
The emotional appeal was met with tears from parents and teachers present, highlighting the deep concern over the ongoing industrial action, which has now entered its 17th day. Primary teachers nationwide are participating in the strike to demand resolution of long-standing issues, chiefly salary disparities between science and arts teachers, as well as better working conditions and remuneration.
The strike has significantly disrupted the education of thousands of children, delaying lessons and causing anxiety among students preparing for their crucial examinations. P7 candidates, in particular, are anxious about their upcoming Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), which are critical for their academic progression.
In his speech, MP Ocen warned that continued teacher strikes risk undermining the educational foundation of the country and could negatively impact the future of Uganda’s youth. He urged teachers to consider the long-term implications and to prioritize the children’s education over industrial disputes.
The event also saw the dedication of over 500 children to God, in a ceremony attended by various community groups, further emphasizing the importance of unity and hope for the future.
This plea from MP Ocen adds to the growing calls from education stakeholders, parents, and community leaders urging teachers and government authorities to find an amicable resolution. Negotiations between teachers’ unions and the government are ongoing, with many hoping for a swift resolution to restore normalcy in schools.
