Kampala, Uganda: Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections, Alebtong District is already abuzz with political activity and early predictions. Among the many contenders, three prominent figures have emerged as frontrunners, enjoying strong grassroots support and backing from the ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM).
### 1. Dr. Lakisa Mercy – NRM Flagbearer for Alebtong Woman Parliamentary Seat
Dr. Lakisa Mercy, a qualified medical doctor, is making waves as the NRM candidate for the Alebtong Woman Parliamentary seat. Her professional background in healthcare combined with her active involvement in youth leadership has garnered her widespread support, particularly among women and young voters. During her internal party campaigns, Lakisa received massive backing from NRM supporters, positioning her as a favorite to clinch the seat. Her commitment to effective leadership and development, especially in health and youth empowerment, makes her a strong contender in the upcoming elections.
2. Denis Hamson Obua – NRM Vice Chairperson (Northern Region)
Denis Hamson Obua’s recent elevation to the role of NRM Vice Chairperson for the Northern Region underscores his growing influence within the ruling party. Currently serving as the Member of Parliament for Ajuri County, Obua's strategic role in national politics and his close ties to party leadership position him as a leading candidate to retain his parliamentary seat. His popularity within the party machinery and his active engagement in regional development initiatives are significant factors in his favor.

3. Samuel Okwir Odwee – Incumbent MP for Moroto County (NRM)
Samuel Okwir Odwee, the incumbent MP representing Moroto County, remains a key political figure in Alebtong District. Despite facing stiff competition from UPC’s Leo Elem, Okwir's incumbency advantage and robust party machinery give him a strong platform for re-election. However, analysts warn that the race could be competitive, with the opposition mounting a serious challenge. Still, Okwir’s experience and political influence make him a notable contender in the upcoming polls.
As the 2026 elections approach, political dynamics in Alebtong are expected to intensify, with each candidate mobilizing their supporters and strategizing for victory.
