Kampala, Uganda – As Uganda approaches the crucial 2026 elections, political parties are intensifying their internal elections, aiming to elect leaders who will mobilize supporters and identify strong candidatesfor national positions. Among these pivotal selections, Aisha Bint Abdu, an outspoken advocate for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), has officially declared her candidacy for Vice Chairperson of the Northern Region under the PWD’s NRM League, vying for the 2026-2031 term.

Aisha currently serves as the Secretary for Works and Technical Services in Lira City East, a position through which she has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a strong commitment to the welfare of PWDs. She has played an active role in infrastructure development, accessibility initiatives, and policy advocacy, making her a respected figure in governance.  

Her leadership experience is extensive—not only within Lango but across Uganda and beyond. Notably, she has been instrumental in promoting PWD sports development in Tanzania, emphasizing inclusion and empowerment through sports. Her efforts have strengthened cross-border collaboration in disability rights and representation.

Among the candidates who have expressed interest in the position, Aisha stands out due to her wealth of experience, strong leadership skills, and unwavering commitment to uplifting marginalized voices.

During her official media address, Aisha pledged to provide effective leadership with a focus on transparency, accountability, and equal opportunity for all PWDs in Northern Uganda. Her campaign manifesto highlights key commitments, including:

- Lobbying for development projects that address the needs of PWDs.

- Enhancing accessibility 

in infrastructure, employment, and public services.

Amplifying PWD voices in decision-making processes.

- Implementing policies that foster inclusion, equity, and representation.

- Eliminating systemic barriers that hinder PWDs from realizing their full potential.

Aisha affirmed her dedication to creating an equitable system, stating:  

 “This movement is about fostering a society where every individual, regardless of ability, is empowered to succeed.”

Mobilizing Supporters for Change

Aisha’s campaign posters prominently feature calls to “VOTE,” urging constituents to actively engage in the upcoming elections. While official election dates remain unconfirmed, her team continues to reach out to communitie, encouraging early mobilization efforts.

Her candidacy is a turning point in PWD representation within Northern Uganda politics, and if elected, she aims to influence policy reforms that promote greater accessibility and governance transparency a shift that many disability advocates believe is long .

Recognizing the strides made by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in security, infrastructure, and economic development, Aisha expressed her intent to collaborate closely with the government to sustain progress. She emphasized that stronger cooperation between the executive and legislature is essential to securing long-term improvements for PWDs in Northern Uganda.

Aisha made it clear that she will not be intimidated by other contenders, standing firm in her mission to deliver meaningful change.

With a long-standing reputation in politics, Aisha previously served as Vice Chairman of Central Division in the former Lira Municipality and is currently the PWD Representative for Lira City East Division.

 She also holds leadership roles within the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, where she advocates for **PWD inclusion and well-being.
