Uganda -St. Gracious S.S, Lira Student Travels to Russia for 60th International Mendeleev Chemistry Competition
LIRA, UGANDA: The 60th International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad is set to take place in Moscow from April 15 to 23, 2026, hosted at the prestigious Lomonosov Moscow State University. The Olympiad is one of the oldest and most demanding international chemistry competitions, bringing together top-performing secondary school students from over 40 countries.
The competition will feature two rigorous theoretical examination rounds and one practical laboratory round, testing participants’ analytical, problem-solving, and experimental skills in chemistry.
A Report indicates, Uganda will be represented by five outstanding students, including 18-year-old Solomon Atine, a UACE candidate at St. Gracious Secondary School in Lira City. Atine, who studies Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics, earned his place on the national team after excelling in the country’s highly competitive selection process.
Atine was officially flagged off during a colorful ceremony held at his school, attended by family members, teachers, and fellow students who gathered to wish him success on his international journey.
The chief guest, Andrew Odur, Director of Lira Regional Referral Hospital, praised St. Gracious Secondary School for its commitment to nurturing young scientists and strengthening science education. He commended Atine for his performance in chemistry, noting that his achievement has earned him the opportunity to represent Uganda on the global stage.
“This is a great opportunity,” Dr. Odur said. “Go and raise the Ugandan flag high, excel in the competition, and proudly represent your school and country.”
In preparation for the Olympiad, the school supported Atine with a brand-new computer to assist with research and academic work, along with other travel essentials as he prepares for the competition in Moscow.
St. Gracious Secondary School has a reputation for excellence in science education. In 2025, some of its students represented Uganda at the 59th International Chemistry Olympiad in Brazil, an achievement that helped place the country on the global academic map and inspired many young learners to pursue science subjects.
Speaking during the ceremony, Matrine Ojok Anyuru highlighted the school’s dedication to student success, he emphasized that the institution prioritizes mentorship, academic discipline, and continuous engagement in educational activities that build capacity in Uganda’s education sector.
Solomon Atine comes from a humble background, being raised by a secondary school teacher. His parents expressed immense pride and gratitude to the school for nurturing their son’s talent and providing him with the opportunity to travel abroad for such a prestigious competition.

“This is a blessing to our family,” they said, noting the significance of the opportunity not only for their son but for the community at large.
