Lira City, Uganda: Local leaders in Lira City have applauded Elwa Sunrise Schools for their proactive efforts in developing a Child Safeguard Policy Document, aimed at ensuring a safe and protective learning environment for students. The initiative has been hailed as a significant step in strengthening child welfare measures within educational institutions.

During a recent event held at the school in Barapwo Ward, government officials and community representatives expressed their appreciation for the institution’s commitment to safeguarding children.

Lira City Female Workers Councillor Shara Awor thanked the school for taking the initiative, emphasizing the importance of structured policies in promoting students' well-being and ensuring they grow in a secure environment.

"lElwa Sunrise Schools developed the Child Safeguard Policy Document as part of a broader initiative to enhance school safety and promote children's rights," she noted.

The safeguard policy outlines clear procedures for addressing child-related risks, providing training for teachers and staff on safety protocols, and establishing a reporting and response system for concerns regarding child welfare.

According to Tuli John Bosco, Executive Director of Elwa Sunrise Schools, this initiative aligns with national child protection guidelines and serves as a model for other schools in the region.

"This policy will help reduce child abuse and ensure children achieve their goals in a safe environment," he added.

Local leaders have encouraged other schools to adopt similar policies to foster a culture of safety and accountability in education.

Isaac Ojok, a presidential aide in Lira, attended a recent child safeguarding policy workshop at the school and praised its administration for introducing innovative ideas. He also condemned traditional corporal punishment and urged parents and educators to embrace modern, non-violent disciplinary methods that support children's emotional and psychological well-being.

Parents and teachers have also welcomed the initiative, expressing confidence that such measures will enhance trust within the school community and create a child-friendly learning atmosphere.

Elwa Sunrise Schools are collaborating with child welfare organizations to further develop and integrate additional safeguarding measures into the institution’s daily operations.

Meanwhile, education experts and child rights activists are advocating for nationwide adoption of similar policies to ensure every child has a secure space to learn and grow.

Beyond its child protection efforts, Elwa Sunrise Schools is recognized among the best-performing schools in Northern Uganda. In 2024, the school excelled in the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), with all its candidates qualifying for the next level of education and 95% scoring top-grade results in the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) assessments.
