Live On Qfm, Lira: The Longest serving MP Okot Ogong Pledges to Keep on Extending his Support to Lango People Amid His Political Defeat In Dokolo South
Dokolo, Uganda – Veteran Dokolo South Member of Parliament for Dokolo South, Felix Okot Ogong, who has served in Parliament continuously since 1996, has reaffirmed his commitment to providing leadership guidance to the people of Lango and the entire nation amid his political defeat.
Okot, a respected and influential figure in Lango politics, emphasized that the strong foundation laid by himself and the late Cecilia Atim Ogwal—former Woman Member of Parliament for Dokolo—has made it easier for future leaders to effectively govern the district of Dokolo. He highlighted that their collective efforts over the years have created a lasting institutional framework that supports sustainable development.
He stated, “For 30 years, I have served as MP for Dokolo, and throughout this period, I have maintained a clean record, avoiding scandals and leading with integrity.” His reputation as a principled leader has earned him respect within the community, and he emphasized that this integrity remains a cornerstone of his continued influence.
Okot Ogong strongly dismissed claims that his stepping back from active political leadership would negatively impact Dokolo’s future. During interviews on QFM Radio and Oroma TV on Wednesday, he expressed confidence in the district’s resilience, citing the strong institutional structures established during his tenure and that of the late Cecilia Atim Ogwal.
“Dokolo will not suffer much because the systems we created are still in place,” he said. “Both Cecilia and I dedicated ourselves to building a sustainable governance framework that future leaders can rely on.” He added that these structures include capacity-building initiatives, community engagement mechanisms, and institutional policies aimed at promoting stability and development.
While acknowledging that he is no longer in an elected position following his recent electoral defeat to Uganda People's Congress (UPC) candidate Hon. Vincent Opito, Okot Ogong assured the community that he remains committed to supporting their progress. “Though I am out of the official political arena, I will still be available to offer guidance and support to the people of Dokolo and Lango,” he stated. This demonstrates his ongoing dedication to regional development beyond formal office.
During the broadcast, Ogong also condemned what he described as the “attack on great leaders of Lango on social media.” Without citing specific incidents, his remarks reflect growing concern over online defamation and character attacks, which he believes threaten social cohesion and respect for community leaders. He called for more responsible discourse and emphasized the importance of unity and mutual respect among leaders and citizens.
In reflecting on his long career, Ogong highlighted his instrumental role in restoring peace to the Lango sub-region. He notably led the Amuka Protection Force, a civilian militia that contributed significantly to countering the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency in the early 2000s. His efforts in peacebuilding and security have left a lasting legacy in the region, contributing to the stability that has allowed development initiatives to

Okot Ogong’s message aims to reassure constituents amid the recent electoral shift. While he expressed disappointment at his defeat in the recent parliamentary race, he emphasized that the foundations for ongoing growth and stability are strong. His call for respectful political engagement and constructive dialogue underscores his vision for a united and progressive Dokolo and Lango community.
