Kole, Uganda — Former Kole North Member of Parliament Bonny Okello has officially withdrawn from the upcoming parliamentary race, declaring his full support for independent candidate Judith Alyek. This unexpected endorsement is being widely viewed as a potential game-changer in a constituency known for its competitive political landscape.**

Okello, who served in the 10th Parliament (2016-2021), made the announcement during a press briefing held at his residence in Kole Town Council on Tuesday. He explained that his decision was motivated by a desire to promote unity among voters and to prevent vote splitting, which he believes could undermine efforts to unseat the incumbent, Dr. Opio

He added that, beyond endorsing Alyek, he and his campaign task force will continue mobilizing votes for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) presidential candidate, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, in the 2026 general elections. This move underscores his broader political strategy of consolidating support across different factions to strengthen the ruling party’s influence in the region.

Okello told his supporters in Kole North, where majorities traditionally support NRM and Uganda People's Congress (UPC), that “this election is not about individuals; it’s about the future of Kole North. I have chosen to step aside for the sake of unity and progress. Judith Alyek has my full support because she represents integrity, courage, and a genuine commitment to community development.”

Alyek, who is running as an independent after breaking ranks with her party’s primary process, expressed gratitude for Okello’s endorsement. She described it as “a gesture of leadership and patriotism,” emphasizing her commitment to addressing key issues such as youth employment, agricultural reform, health services, and improved infrastructure in Kole North. Alyek also highlighted her plans to foster dialogue among various community factions to promote peace and stability.

Political analysts suggest that Okello’s withdrawal and endorsement could significantly alter the dynamics of the race, especially among undecided voters and opposition supporters. They argue that this could tilt the scales in favor of Alyek, who has positioned herself as a candidate of change and development.

Residents of Kole North exhibited mixed reactions to Okello’s decision. Some praised him as a statesman who prioritized unity and the broader interests of the community, while others expressed disappointment.

Historically, Kole North has been a battleground constituency, often swinging between different parties and independent candidates, reflecting the diverse political sentiments of its population. The outcome of this race is now viewed as a critical indicator of voter sentiment ahead of national elections, especially in a period marked by political consolidation and shifting allegiances.

Recently, one of the candidates, Patrick Awongo Ogwal also withdrawn from the race to back Alyek’s opponent, Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti who is the incumbent runing under NRM ticket.
