Leaders and stakeholders from the Lango sub-region are intensifying their advocacy for the appointment of more of their sons and daughters in the forthcoming Cabinet reshuffle.
According to a well-placed source, a carefully curated list of potential ministerial candidates from Lango has already been compiled by Lango stakeholders to be submitted. The list reflects a deliberate effort to balance gender and competence, featuring five male and five female candidates, all selected based on merit, leadership ability, and regional influence.
To qualify for a ministerial position in Uganda, candidates are generally expected to demonstrate strong moral character, proven mobilization capacity, integrity, and a consistent record of public service. Over the years, President Yoweri Museveni has emphasized the importance of balancing gender, regional representation, and competence when appointing his Cabinet, ensuring inclusivity and effectiveness in governance.
Behind-the-Scenes Lobbying Intensifies
As the country edges closer to the announcement of a new Cabinet, lobbying efforts have reportedly intensified. Various regional leaders and interest groups are said to be quietly engaging State House, presenting their preferred candidates for consideration.
In Lango, the cultural institution under the leadership of Eng. Odongo Okune has reportedly taken a proactive role by compiling a shortlist of 10 prominent individuals. The institution is reportedly engaging relevant authorities and appointment committees to ensure that the region secures meaningful representation in the next government.
In line with the national agenda of gender equality, several prominent women from Lango have emerged as strong candidates for ministerial appointments:
1. Judith Alyek
The Member of Parliament for Kole District and a committed member of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Judith Alyek holds a Master’s degree in Public Health. She is widely recognized for her mobilization strength and previously served as Chairperson of the Lango Parliamentary Group. Her leadership experience positions her as a strong candidate capable of delivering impactful results at the national level.
In 2026, she lost her parliamentary position in an election.
2. Ambassador Rebecca Amuge Otengo
Currently serving in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Ambassador Rebecca Amuge Otengo is a seasoned diplomat and politician. She previously served as Minister for Northern Uganda (2016–2021) and played a key role in mobilizing support for the NRM during recent elections. Known for her contributions to peacebuilding and reconciliation, her return to Cabinet would bring valuable experience and regional balance.
3. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng
The current Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Lira City, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng remains one of the most influential leaders from Lango. Her stewardship of Uganda’s health sector, especially during critical periods, has earned her national recognition. She is widely expected to retain or even elevate her position in the next Cabinet.
**4. Betty Amongi Akena
Serving as the Minister for Gender, Labour, and Social Development and MP for Oyam South, Betty Amongi Akena is a seasoned politician with a strong track record in advancing social protection and gender equality. Her experience and political acumen make her a strong contender for a more senior Cabinet role.
When she chanaged to Lira City she lost an election against Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero.
5. Auma Linda Agnes
The Woman Member of Parliament for Lira District, Auma Linda Agnes, is an experienced politician whose leadership journey began in youth activism. She previously served as Chairperson of the NRM Women’s League. Her grassroots connection and advocacy for women’s empowerment make her a compelling candidate for ministerial appointment.
In 2026, Auma retains her seat as the woman mp for Lira District.
