Exclusive: From Under a Tree to a Modern Academic Landmark — The Inspiring Story of UCI School of Nursing and Midwifery, Lira, JOIN US NOW

Lira City, Uganda— During the years of conflict in Northern Uganda, very few people had the opportunity to establish fully fledged private academic institutions due to limited financial resources and instability in the region. Many visionary founders who desired to promote education were forced to begin with whatever was available — sometimes teaching under the shade of mango trees or in temporary church structures.
Uganda Christian Institute School of Nursing and Midwifery was no exception. The institution, which has now grown into one of the leading private nursing and midwifery schools in Northern Uganda, started modestly under trees and in church buildings in Lira City.
However, through determination, strategic planning, hard work, and faith in God, the institution has transformed remarkably over the years. Today, UCI stands as a true testimony that success is built step by step. What began with only certificate programmes has expanded into diploma programmes, supported by fully developed infrastructure including permanent classroom blocks, hostels, administrative buildings, practical learning facilities, and spacious compounds that provide a conducive learning environment for students.
Under the leadership and contribution of committed educationists such as Sam Omara, the school has continued to grow in both reputation and academic excellence. UCI School of Nursing and Midwifery is now recognised not only for producing competent, disciplined, and compassionate health professionals, but also for inspiring investors and academics across the region and the country to invest in health education.

On Thursday, 6th May 2026, a visit to the institution revealed impressive ongoing developments and expansion projects aimed at improving learning standards and student welfare. The institution has continued to register strong academic performance in national examinations, outperforming several health training institutions across Uganda. In addition, one of its students recently excelled in both regional and national skills competitions, further elevating the school’s reputation.
Beyond nursing and midwifery, the institution has also expanded into other professional fields through the Uganda Christian Institute of Professional Development campus in Lira. The campus offers programmes in Social Sciences, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Agriculture, leadership development, and other professional disciplines aimed at preparing future leaders and skilled professionals.
