Lira District Poised to Elect First Female Speaker in Lango History As Councilors Rally Behind Angwech Pamela
Lira, Uganda : Lira District is on the verge of making history as leaders and council members prepare to elect the district’s first-ever female Speaker, marking a significant milestone in the political journey of the Lango sub-region. The development has generated excitement among residents, civil society groups, and political leaders who view it as a major step toward gender equality and inclusive governance.
At the center of this historic moment is Hon. Angwech Pamela, the Workers’ Councilor in Lira District, whose bid for the speakership has gained strong backing from fellow councilors and various community stakeholders.
For decades, the Lango sub-region has witnessed limited female representation in top political positions, particularly in leadership roles within local governments. If elected, Hon. Angwech Pamela would break a long-standing barrier and become a symbol of women’s growing participation in decision-making processes across Northern Uganda.
Hon. Angwech Pamela has built a reputation as a committed and outspoken advocate for workers’ rights, community development, and social inclusion. Her supporters describe her as a dedicated leader with the ability to unite council members and promote transparent leadership within the district.
Her candidacy has received support from female councillors, youth, and the entire council memebers, many of whom believe her leadership would bring fresh ideas and strengthen service delivery in the district.
Speaking to the media, Hon. Angwech Pamela confirmed her readiness to contest for the speakership race, expressing confidence in the support she has received from councilors and the public.
“I am prepared to serve the people of Lira District with dedication, fairness, and integrity. I am grateful for the overwhelming support from fellow leaders and community members,” she said.
Angwech, who is affiliated with the National Resistance Movement (NRM), noted that her campaign is focused on unity, accountability, and improving cooperation among district leaders for the benefit of residents.
Political analysts say the possible election of a female Speaker in Lira District reflects the gradual transformation taking place in local governance, where more women are stepping forward to take leadership positions traditionally dominated by men.
Community members have also welcomed the development, saying female leadership often promotes dialogue, inclusiveness, and community-centered decision-making. Many believe the election could inspire more women and young girls in the Lango sub-region to actively participate in politics and leadership.

As the district prepares for the decisive vote, attention remains fixed on Lira District, where a new chapter in local governance may soon be written. The growing support for Hon. Angwech Pamela highlights an increasing demand for progressive leadership and equal representation in Uganda’s political landscape.
