KAMPALA, Uganda: As families across Uganda prepare to celebrate International MotherŌĆÖs Day this Sunday, a private nursing and midwifery training institution in Lira City has urged the nation to look beyond a single day of festivities and recognize the months of silent struggle that define motherhood, while also honoring the midwives who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure safe births.

Dr. Isaac Orec, founder and director of Victoria School of Nursing and Midwifery, said the nine-month journey of pregnancy through sickness, fatigue, anxiety and joy deserves far more than a celebration.

"A mother carries her child for months, through sickness, fatigue, and joy. That alone makes this day a great day," the school said in a statement released ahead of the May 10 observance. "We are calling on the nation to cherish women not just for the pain of delivery, but for the nearly nine months of silent struggle, sacrifice, and unwavering care that precedes every child's first breath."

But the institution also turned its attention to a group it says often works in the shadows: midwives.

Dr. Orec said no mother gives birth safely alone and that behind every healthy baby is a midwife who has sacrificed rest and family time.

"Behind every thriving baby and healthy mother is a midwife who has sacrificed sleep, comfort, and countless nights to ensure the delivery room sees only good news," Orec said. "Not only are there mothers who struggle, but there are midwives who never sleep to ensure that mothers give birth to healthy babies and that the mother remains healthy."

Safe birth requires skill

Dr. Orec added that safe childbirth requires attendants with far more than textbook knowledge. Practical skills, compassion, quick thinking, and the ability to act decisively in a crisis are essential, he said.

"As Victoria School of Nursing and Midwifery, we believe that for a mother to give birth to a healthy baby, it needs midwives who have heart, love, and know what to do," he said. "That is why Victoria always produces the best midwives with good skills and who can be good caregivers during birth."

The school offers certificate and diploma extension programs in both nursing and midwifery, with a curriculum approved by Ministry Of Education and Sports.

Students gain practical experience through placements at Lira Regional Referral Hospital, Ogur Health Center IV, and Amac Health Center IV.

The privately established health training institution is located in Lira City East Division, near the Lango Cultural Centre, and is licensed by the Ministry of Education and Sports with examination center number U115.
