Lango NRM  Top Carders  Reject  Sarah  Awor's Move to Run Against Dr. Aceng In 2026

Lira, Uganda: Top NRM  carders in  Lango sub-region voiced their discontent with Sara Awor Angweri decision to run against a prominent Lango politician, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, Lira City woman Mp .

The dispute surrounding the woman  parliamentary position in Lira City has intensified with UPC fronting wife to Jimmy Akena Obote  (UPC) President, Betty Amongi, the incumbent mp of Oyam south. 

Members of the NRM in Lira City have openly criticized Hon. Sara Awor Angweri, an independent female workers' councilor, for purportedly asserting her affiliation with tthem and Betty Amongi for also challenging Dr. Aceng who is viewed as a game changer.

During a contentious meeting held today at Lira Hotel, led by NRM member top senior carder, Goerge Okot, the attendees made it clear that they would not extend any political backing to Awor Angweri, whom they labeled a political opportunist. 

This situation arises in light of Awor's recent declaration of her intention to contest against the current Member of Parliament for Lira City, Dr. Jane Ruth Acheng, in the forthcoming 2026 elections under the NRM platform.

Okot underscored that the fundamental duty of NRM carders is to rally individuals who share their ideological beliefs. He further accused Hon. Betty Amongi of being the catalyst behind Awor's candidacy against Acheng, whom he characterized as a formidable opponent. Okot urged Amongi to reconsider her political aspirations and return to  Oyam South, asserting that Acheng remains a strong contender in Lira City.

Moses Opio, the former NRM chairperson for Lira Municipality, called upon fellow carders to reject both Amongi and Awor Angweri, branding them as anti development agents in Lango.

Additionally, Okello Solomon, another NRM carder, expressed that their unified stance is to thwart any competition against Dr. Acheng Ocero, citing her numerous contributions to the region's development.

George Okot, a carder in Lira City, commented that Sara Awor Angweri does not represent a significant threat, suggesting that her candidacy is more about seeking attention than presenting a serious challenge.

In a media briefing on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at Lira Hotel, Awor articulated her vision for promoting unity, development  within the newly established Lira City. She conveyed her preparedness to face Dr. Acheng and Betty Amongi in the pivotal political contest .

In his remarks,  addressing the carders, Jonal Okot the Assistant Resident district commissioner Apac thanked the group for being loyal to the party and asked them to  support NRM politicians.

He also well described Dr. Aceng as great leader who is promoting government programs. 

Several political experts have warned  Political leaders with ambitions  to contest against Dr. Aceng to prepare adequately because has delivered more  development in the area.

Research as per now puts Dr. Ruth Aceng Ocero among mps in Lango most likely to retain their seats in parliament. 

Over 100 senior nrm carders dressed in nrm party color  with name of Dr. Aceng endorsed her  as a sole candidate for Lira city woman mp seat.
