Apac, Uganda : Maruzi County in Apac District has lagged behind in terms of development with thousands of households still below the poverty line.

The constituency represented by Maxwell Akora of UPC party for the last 14 years is grappling with poor access to clean water, quality education, bad roads and many households still wallowing in poverty.

Maruzi County, the home of the late former president Dr Apollo Milton Obote is now in the hands of aspiring MP candidates after the elected MP Maxwell Akora abandoned the voters and shifted to Apac Municipality.

However, there is a ray of hope following several interventions by the area MP aspirant Yasmin Ecii commonly known as Bulldozer who is now focusing on community development projects.

Her commitment towards improving the welfare of the people in Maruzi County can be felt through repair of broken boreholes, donations to support building of churches and also supporting village savings and women led groups.

She has repaired more than 30 boreholes within the last three months. Some boreholes repaired includes Aduni Borehole in Ibuje Town Council, Aluga Borehole in Akokoro Subcounty, Alworoceng Borehole in Ibuje Subcounty and Acanpii Borehole in Apoi Subcounty among others.

Yasmin is not only repairing boreholes but she has supported the building of churches with donations of iron sheets and cement.

In December last year she organised the football tournament which attracted more than 50 parish based football clubs drawing together more than 1,500 youth to showcase their talents in football and the winner walked away with Shs 2 million, a set of football jersey and a trophy.

Denis Nengo, a resident of Amun Village in Apoi says that Yasmin Ecii has has left a mark in the lives of many people in their area.

“Through her guidance we have formed a strong village savings which is now helping the low income earners in the village to access finance to support their business,” he said.

Agnes Akello, a resident of Alworoceng Trading Centre in Alworoceng Parish, Ibuje Subcounty says that Ecii rescued them from sharing water source with animals.

There was a borehole in our area which broke down and lasted for over four years but she came and restored it now it is functioning and people are accessing clean water with ease,” she said.

In Ayumi Trading Centre, Apio Subcounty she supported the building of a church which is now about to get completed.

“Our church construction had stalled at the roofing level but through her support and the woman MP, we have already roofed our church. I think she is God’s given to answer our cries,” Solomon Odongo, the chairperson construction of Ayumi Catholic church said.

Alfred Odyek Abongo, a resident of Acenglyet Village in Akokoro Subcounty said that their area MP abandoned them and they are left behind interms of development.

“We have so many issues affecting us that we would like our Mp to address but we don’t see him. I believe the coming of Yasmin Ecii will bring a positive change,” he said.

Amos Olow, the political assistant to Yasmin Ecii said that more project is still in the offing to support the community.

“Our teams are within the community working to close the gap in the healthcare , education and clean water access. We are also planning to distribute more mamkits to expectant mothers, repairing more boreholes and projects that can enhance households income, “ he said.

Other candidates vying for Maruzi County MP seat are; Peter Obong Acuda, Apac District speaker(UPC), Maxwell Wellbon Omara(UPC), Sam Baker Atine, (NRM), Moses Opeto(NRM) and Walter Obang of the newly founded Peoples Front For Freedom(PFF) party.
