Sad News!! Another Bobi Wine's Ex MP Dies Mysteriously, Here Is What Happened
Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, is mourning the death of former Busiro South Member of Parliament Charles Matovu, who died suddenly on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at the age of 41. Matovu passed away at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala after suffering a sudden health complication earlier in the week. His unexpected death has shocked members of the National Unity Platform (NUP), political colleagues, friends and supporters who knew him during his years in public service.
Bobi Wine expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Matovu, describing him as a brother, comrade and fellow leader. In a message shared on X, the NUP president said he had received shocking news about the former legislator's death. He also maintained that Matovu had been denied victory in the January 2026 parliamentary elections. “Very shocking news! May God strengthen all of us,” Bobi Wine wrote, expressing his grief over the loss of a fellow opposition figure.
NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya provided details about the former MP's final days, revealing that Matovu developed a sudden health complication on Monday night, October 19. His family reportedly rushed him to Lubaga Hospital, where he received medical attention. According to Rubongoya, when he visited Matovu on Thursday morning, the former legislator was in critical condition and could neither speak nor open his eyes, although he was still alive. His condition had deteriorated significantly, leaving family members and political colleagues worried about his chances of recovery.
Matovu was later transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for further medical investigations, but he died shortly afterwards. Rubongoya announced the devastating news, describing the development as extremely shocking. By Thursday evening, the family had not publicly revealed the exact cause of death. Although details surrounding his final illness remained unclear, the speed with which his condition deteriorated left many Ugandans searching for answers. No confirmed medical explanation had been made public at the time of reporting.
The former legislator died while pursuing a court case challenging the outcome of the January 2026 parliamentary elections in Busiro South. The Electoral Commission declared National Resistance Movement candidate Kenan Opio the winner with 36,497 votes, while Matovu received 30,487 votes. Disputing the results, Matovu petitioned the High Court in Entebbe, alleging electoral irregularities and violations of electoral laws that he believed had affected the outcome of the contest. He was seeking legal redress when his sudden death brought his political journey to an unexpected end.
The legal battle had taken several turns before Matovu's death. On September 25, 2026, the High Court dismissed his application seeking access to additional electoral materials, ruling that his requests lacked sufficient detail. However, the decision did not resolve the main election petition. Justice Johnson Karemani began hearing the substantive case on October 16, just six days before Matovu died. His passing has therefore left the future of the election dispute uncertain, with questions remaining about how the proceedings may be affected.
Born on April 1, 1985, Matovu was an electrical engineer who represented Busiro South in Wakiso District during Uganda's 11th Parliament from 2021 to 2026. He entered Parliament after winning the 2021 general elections on the NUP ticket. His political career was also marked by tensions during the 2025–2026 election campaigns. In December 2025, NUP reported that men allegedly dressed in security uniforms attacked Matovu and members of his campaign team while they were canvassing for votes, leaving some people injured and requiring treatment at Mengo Hospital.
Matovu's death has dealt a painful blow to his family, friends and fellow opposition leaders, who are remembering his contribution to public service and his involvement in Uganda's political affairs. Bobi Wine and other NUP officials have expressed grief as the family prepares to communicate funeral arrangements. While the exact cause of Matovu's final illness remains undisclosed, his death at just 41 has left many people shocked. Beyond the personal loss, his passing has also left an unresolved election petition and raised fresh questions about the legal process surrounding the disputed Busiro South parliamentary race.
