WON NYACI’S FARM TOUR PUTS AGRICULTURE AT THE HEART OF LANGO’S ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION

**LIRA CITY, UGANDA** — Lango’s cultural leadership is set to turn attention to agriculture as a driver of wealth creation and rural development, with Paramount Chief His Highness Dr. Eng. Michael Moses Odongo Okune expected to lead a delegation of clan chiefs to City Gate Mixed Farm in Amuca, Lira City, on Sunday, November 1, 2026.

The planned agro-tourism visit will precede the second coronation anniversary celebrations of the Won Nyaci, scheduled for Monday, November 2, at Mayor’s Garden in Lira City.

The initiative is expected to promote modern farming, food security and entrepreneurship, while encouraging communities to view agriculture as a viable business rather than merely a subsistence activity.

For a region where agriculture supports many households, the visit presents an opportunity to connect cultural leadership with practical discussions about livelihoods, investment and economic empowerment.

Changing Attitudes Towards Farming

For years, farming has sustained families across Lango, yet negative perceptions about agriculture have discouraged some young people and educated professionals from considering it a business opportunity.

The planned visit seeks to promote a different mindset, highlighting the potential of modern agricultural practices, improved production methods, market access and value addition to increase household incomes.

Traditional leaders are also expected to have an opportunity to learn about mixed farming and consider how agricultural knowledge can be shared with communities across the region.

The underlying message is that education and agriculture can complement each other, enabling farmers to apply knowledge, technology and business skills to improve productivity.

City Gate Mixed Farm Chief Executive Calls for Mindset Change

Pius Olam, Chief Executive Director of City Gate Mixed Farm, confirmed the planned visit, describing it as an opportunity for the farm to host the Won Nyaci and interact with the delegation of clan chiefs.

Olam said the engagement would provide an opportunity for exchanging ideas on agriculture and its contribution to community development.

He urged the people of Lango to abandon the perception that farming is an occupation for people who have not attended school, calling for a more business-oriented approach to agricultural production.

With proper planning, appropriate farming methods and access to reliable markets, agriculture can support enterprises ranging from crop production and livestock keeping to processing and produce trading.

 Culture and Development Working Together

The visit comes as Lango prepares to mark the second anniversary of Dr. Odongo Okune’s coronation, adding an economic development dimension to the cultural celebrations.

Cultural institutions can play a role in promoting community dialogue, preserving heritage and encouraging initiatives that support livelihoods. Through engagement with agricultural enterprises, traditional leaders can help draw attention to opportunities available within their communities.

For Lango, the challenge will be translating such engagements into practical action, including greater investment in farming skills, access to markets, youth participation and sustainable land use.

The planned excursion also carries a message for the next generation: agriculture need not be a last resort for those unable to secure formal employment. It can be a deliberate business choice for people willing to learn, innovate and invest.

As the region prepares for the anniversary celebrations at Mayor’s Garden, the proposed farm visit places agriculture firmly within the conversation about Lango’s future.
