West Nile ! 11th Alur Festival returns to Zombo, aids clean water access

The 11th Alur Cultural Festival is making a triumphant homecoming to its ancestral heartland, with organizers unveiling an exciting twist: proceeds from the star-studded event will fuel a major clean water revival project in Zombo District.

Set to light up Bar Okoro Stadium in Paidha on May 31, 2026, this milestone edition returns to core Alur territory after years of hosting in venues like Kampala, answering longtime calls from the community in West Nile and across the border in DR Congo to "bring it home."

Under the powerful theme "Back to the Roots: Preserving Culture, Giving Life through Clean Water in our Community," the festival promises an electrifying lineup of rhythmic traditional dances, ancestral storytelling, pulsating local and national music performances, indigenous Alur cuisine, crafts showcases, and intergenerational vibes, with special guest artists from Uganda and neighboring DR Congo expected to bring the energy.

But this isn't just about entertainment it's about impacts as Festival organizers announced during a high-energy media launch and press conference at Bar Okoro Stadium on Saturday, March 7, 2026, that ticket sales, sponsorships, and contributions will directly support the rehabilitation of existing but non-functional water sources across Zombo.

Dr. Roy Anyolitho, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, told the press: "We are not going to construct new boreholes or springs because the money might be limited. We have already identified different water sources... we are going to use the proceeds to repair those water sources."

The initiative addresses ongoing water scarcity in parts of Zombo, where water coverage stood at about 87% as of late 2024, with functionality of existing sources at 79% , despite government efforts.

Albert Oyirwoth, Chairperson of the Alur Cultural Festival, spotlighted the event's legacy since its 2015 debut, including sponsoring education for six learners from schools in Zombo, Nebbi, and Pakwach districts, plus tree-planting drives for environmental conservation.

"From the 1st to the 10th edition, we have a lot of success stories to tell," Oyirwoth said.

Aisha Bero Salim, Finance Director, called on community members to register early if they want to showcase authentic Alur cultural foods and drinks at dedicated stalls, turning the festival grounds into a true celebration of heritage.

Sadiki Onencan, Chairperson of the Social Services Committee in Zombo District, welcomed the water-focused commitment and urged early collaboration with local authorities to target the most affected areas for maximum community benefit.

The festival enjoys royal backing from His Majesty Ubimu Phillip Rauni Olarker III, the Alur King , and has grown into one of Uganda's premier cultural showcases.

Chief Omwon Francis Denis Ringulango II, CEO of the Alur Cultural Festival, emphasized the dual mission in a statement delivered at the launch.

 "Culture should not only entertain, culture should transform lives... We are dancing for a purpose. Our energy, our sweat, our music, and our unity will all contribute toward improving lives in our community through access to clean water." He said.

Sponsors including Oyoma General Stores Limited, Pepsi Uganda, MTN Uganda, and Comfort Aluminum Works Limited were thanked for their continous support, alongside media partners amplifying the Alur story.

Organizers extended an open invite to Alur people across Uganda, DR Congo, and the global diaspora to join what they call "a powerful cultural celebration" that proves heritage can drive real unity and change.
