UPDATES : Meet Lt(Rtd) Moses Opio Obaa, The New Lira City NRM General Secretary For Veteran League

Lira City, Uganda: In a significant development for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) veteran community in Lira City, the Veteran League has elected Lt (Rtd) Moses Opio Obaa as the new Secretary General. His leadership is expected to guide the association’s activities and foster unity among former fighters and supporters.

The election featured a spirited contest among several seasoned members of the league. After thorough deliberations and voting, Lt (Rtd) Moses Opio Obaa emerged victorious, receiving overwhelming support from delegates.

In his address to the media, the newly elected Secretary General expressed his dedication to championing the interests of NRM veterans, advocating for their welfare, and strengthening the party’s presence in Lira City. "I am honored to serve as Secretary General and pledge to work tirelessly to ensure our veterans' voices are heard and their contributions recognized," he stated.

The event was attended by prominent NRM leaders, veteran league members, and community stakeholders who lauded the transparent electoral process and emphasized the importance of unity within the veteran community.

 Who is Lt (Rtd) Moses Opio Obaa?

Lt (Rtd) Moses Opio Obaa is a former soldier who served under both President Milton Obote and President Yoweri Museveni. In 1994, he took early retirement and worked closely with Jeda Obaa, the Special District Administrator of Lira District, as well as Captain Isaac Luka, the Special District Administrator. During this period, he played a key role in maintaining peace and security within the district.

In 2011, Lt (Rtd) Moses Opio Obaa entered active politics. He was elected as the chairperson of NRM in Lira Municipality. As a political leader, he actively mobilized votes and contributed to the party’s success in the region, notably leading to the election of the first NRM mayor in Lira City in 2016, with President Museveni garnering strong support in the area.

Additionally, Opio together with the government soliders fought against rebel groups such as Olum Olum, which was led by former soldiers loyal to Obote, opposing President Museveni’s administration at that time and defeated.
