LIRA CITY, UGANDA — A group of National Resistance Movement (NRM) grassroots mobilizers has accused Ms. Betty Amongi, the UPC parliamentary candidate for Lira City, of repeatedly violating the official campaign schedule set by the Electoral Commission.
The allegations were made during a press conference held at Lira Hotel on Tuesday. The group claimed that Ms. Amongi's deviations from the approved campaign roadmap threaten to incite conflict and electoral violence.
Reading a statement on behalf of the group, George Okot, a senior NRM cadre and advisor to NRM candidate Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, cited specific instances of the alleged violations.
“On November 20, 2025, candidate Betty Amongi was scheduled to hold a rally at Odokomit, Akwayo, but she illegally campaigned in Boke Ward instead,” Okot stated. “Similarly, the day before, she went to Lango Central Ward rather than the Starch Factory, as stipulated in the official roadmap.”
Okot warned that such actions could foster conflict and violence. He referenced a recent violent attack on journalist Bob Oyuku Ojok, which he alleged occurred at an unsanctioned campaign event, as an example of the potential consequences.
The NRM team has filed a formal complaint with the Uganda Police Force, electoral commission in the Lango sub-region, urging law enforcement to intervene and ensure Ms. Amongi adheres to the Electoral Commission's directives. They also called for increased security at campaign rallies in Lira City to maintain order.
Calls for Adherence to Electoral Law
Innocent Ogweng, an NRM cadre, emphasized that the NRM is a peaceful party.
He urged Ms. Amongi who is in opposition to follow the official campaign roadmap . “Her actions are creating unnecessary tension and contest,” he said, also condemning the recent attack on journalist Bob Oyuku Ojok.
David Sabiti, an NRM mobilizer and chairperson for Adikdik Gweno in Boke Ward, cautioned Ms. Amongi, stating that failing to follow the campaign guidelines is risky. “The NRM is a law-abiding party, and we condemn such behavior,” Sabiti added.
Ogom Olet Bobi Sam, a parish chairperson and NRM veteran, called on the police to take the matter seriously. He warned that Ms. Amongi’s conduct could lead to legal challenges and hamper the city’s development.
-Support for Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng
During the conference, George Okot also endorsed NRM candidate Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, emphasizing her suitability for Lira City’s economic growth.
“For Lira City to thrive economically, it needs a leader with integrity and loyalty — that leader is Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, who can foster economic transformation,” Okot stated.
In addition, Bob Olet urged Ms. Amongi to respect electoral guidelines. “Amongi should focus on accountability for her parliamentary service since 2001 and avoid actions that could incite violence,” he said.
Sam Bob Olet, a senior cadre and veteran politician, advised Minister Amongi to present her alternative development agenda to voters instead of engaging in behaviors that could lead to violence.
" I want appeal to our honourable daughter, Amongi to stop this act because its very dangerous in this current poltics "
