Exclusive ! How Lawyer Prof. Dr. Alex Bashasha Won Justice for Lango Community, His Legacy is Unforgettable

Lango, Uganda ; As leaders from Lango prepare to meet President Yoweri Museveni to discuss the issue of cattle compensation, many people remember a quiet hero of this struggle: Professor Dr. Alex Bashasha.

While some leaders claim credit for progress, it was the tireless work of Professor Basaha that helped the Lango people get justice.

His dedication, legal knowledge, and commitment to the community have made a lasting difference.

Professor Bashasha started by listening to the people of Lango and gathering evidence.

He spent years building a strong legal case, studying the laws, and working with the community.

His efforts led to a court decision which ordered the government to pay compensation for cattle lost during the war.

This victory was more than just about cattle. It gave hope to many people in Lango. Some beneficiaries used their compensation money to start small businesses or return to school.

Professor Bashasha’s work has inspired others too.

Many in the community praised Professor Bashasha, it's only opposition members and some greedy leaders including lawyers who fought him since they wanted to lead the process.

Some falsely accused him before some top government officials with intention of spreading malicious information against thank God they didn't succeed.

As a result of the compensation, people of Lango in 2011, people of Lango rewarded President Museveni with votes against opposition, most in 2008 resettled from camps to their villages after receiving the compensation as well as improving their livelihoods in the community.

One elder said, “Without him, we would still be suffering. He fought for us and helped us get what was ours.” As President Museveni prepares to meet with Lango leaders, it is important to remember Bashasha’s contribution. Sadly, the current compensation process has been marred by corruption, with some local leaders selling data cards and cheating claimants. But Bashasha’’s work stands out as honest, fair, and dedicated to the community’s good.

His impact goes beyond Lango. Bashasha has shown that with strong legal support, even small communities can get justice.

His story is a lesson for all of Uganda.

A 75-year-old woman from Lango, Imat Betty Odongo still remembers how the compensation helped her return to her village after years in a camp. She appeals to leaders to stop playing politics and focus on justice and development for all war claimants.

Professor Dr. Alex Bashsaha's contribution will never be forgotten. His work brought dignity to the people of Lango and showed the power of standing up for what is right.Bravo, Professor Bashasha.
