Agong Foundation Officially Launched to Empower Lango Women

Proscovia Ayo Otyek informed the minister that the Agong Foundation plans to organize a boot camp in December for girls who have returned from academic institutions. The camp will offer moral guidance, psychosocial support, and career guidance to combat teenage pregnancy.

The Agong Foundation, a new initiative by the Lango Cultural Institution (LCI), was officially launched on Friday, August 1, 2025, at the Lango Cultural Center. The foundation aims to transform the livelihoods of women in Lango by restoring their dignity and empowering them economically.

 Proscovia Ayo Otyek, spokesperson for the Agong Foundation, highlighted the significance of the organization, stating that it will empower women economically and morally. She emphasized that the initiative is a testament to the LCI's commitment to placing women at the center of development in Lango, under the leadership of Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune.

Government Support

Minister Betty Amongi Akena, Gender, Labour, and Social Development, pledged Shs 10 million to support the foundation's activities and promised additional funding in December to facilitate a boot camp for teenage girls. She expressed her delight in seeing the Agong Foundation empower women economically and morally, enabling them to sustain their families with dignity.

"I am happy no note that we now have Agong Foundation that has come on board to empower the women economically and to also straighten them morally on how to sustain their families with dignity" minister Betty Amongi observed

Boot Camp Initiative

Proscovia Ayo Otyek who is also the assistant Resident district commissioner in Lira  informed the minister that the Agong Foundation plans to organize a boot camp in December for girls who have returned from academic institutions. The camp will offer moral guidance, psychosocial support, and career guidance to combat teenage pregnancy.

Blessing of the Vehicle

The launch was attended by the Bishop of Lira Diocese, Sanctus Lino Wanok, who offered prayers and blessed a brand new vehicle donated to the Wonyaci of Lango by the government of Uganda.

 Background

The Agong Foundation was unveiled during the Lango Women's Cultural Conference 2025, held under the theme "Empowering Lango Women for Socioeconomic Advancement through Cultural Value Systems." The conference was presided over by Kenneth Omona, Minister of State for Northern Uganda, who emphasized the importance of culture and women in driving transformation and urged unity among Lango women in tackling poverty and domestic violence.
