REMARKABLE: Elwa Sunrise Schools, Giant PLE Performer In 2024 In Lira City

Lira, Uganda: The Luo Native| In Barapwo ward, West division of Lira City sits Elwa Sunrise Schools, a nursery and Primary institution that imparts not only class knowledge but offers holistic education to the learners. Fully staffed and equipped, the institution geographically situated in the outskirt of the city, most suitable for quality learning, has sparked celebrations among the population of Lira City following its remarkable performance in the recently released Primary Leaving Examinations for 2024.

To simplify, for its first time, the school had registered 19 pupils in the PLE, who all excelled, passing with the flying colors, restoring hope among the city education department officials, a significant milestone which could influence the authorities to recommend this institution for benchmarking to others.

Several decades ago, no one would have believed that the community of Elwa cell in Barapwo ward would enjoy and benefit from a school with such an international setting; thanks to the management of Elwa Sunrise Schools for the well-thought-out initiative of establishing a great center of academic excellence.

Many people have actually, basing on all possible reasons, concluded that this institution can be used as a model school for benchmarking because of clearly evidenced remarkable contributions in education that led to promising results in their first sitting for PLE Exams.

Elwa Sunrise Schools embrace a child-centered philosophy that promotes creative thinking and lifelong learning. The school is really big on character development based on Christian values, practical and generic life skills. It’s important to note that, last year 2024, the Uganda National Examination (UNEB) approved Elwa Sunrise School as a sitting Centre but what is more attractive is that Elwa Sunrise schools is by far the best boarding section in northern Uganda for its dormitory setting of the recommended double decker beds with an innovative box-holding provisions attached.  

This publication has learnt that parents from various parts of the country are flocking in to secure slots for their children in this school that takes almost just peanut from the parents termly. 

The management intimated to this publication that they are not here to make exorbitant profits but rather to maintain the learning facilities and facilitate the highly qualified staff and handle the school feeding program in the school.

In a recent media address, the head teacher of Elwa Sunrise, Nelson Apwonya, thanked the parents for being supportive to management and the teachers that resulted in great achievements in the PLE.

 “The good results demonstrate our commitment creating a motivating and nurturing environment that supports and encourages lifelong learning in our children thereby promoting the standard of education not only in the Lango sub region but the northern region at the most affordable rate to the ‘struggling community’ in the area,” Apwonya explained. 

According to the head teacher, out of 19 candidates who registered and sat for the exams, 17 of them excelled in grade one while only two passed in high second grades leaving community and education experts in celebration.

He added that as God fearing school, they are not just aiming for high grades but hoping to transform the teaching and learning process to make sure that what we are teaching is relevant to the learners’ environment and is immediately impacting them. 

"We are challenging our teachers to adapt to modern approaches, moving away from traditional rote learning and adopting a competency-based approach. While other schools teach their students exactly what to answer if asked a question, for us we are competent based and more hands on in our approach. We must understand the curriculum in a way that benefits the child, not just our desire for better results. In fact we are not only committed to ensuring good results but preparing the learners to achieve their God given potential and become resourceful members of the community. " He added.
