West Nile, Uganda: A fuel tanker burst into flames in Nyaravur-Angal Town Council, Nebbi District, along the Pakwach-Nebbi highway on Saturday evening, sending plumes of thick smoke into the sky.
The truck’s number plate and the driver’s identity remained unconfirmed at the time of reporting.
Sunday Olweny, an eyewitness, reported that the blaze erupted at approximately 5:00 p.m.
It is suspected that the tanker was en route to the Democratic Republic of Congo, carrying a highly flammable load.
As of press time, no police or fire response teams were observed at the scene, and videos showed residents fleeing in panic while others gathered to photograph the intense smoke rising from the inferno.
This incident follows a devastating fire last month that ravaged Nebbi Municipality’s business hub, leaving widespread destruction in its wake.
The recurring blazes have sparked urgent calls for dedicated police fire brigades in the greater Nebbi region, as reliance on the distant Arua Fire Centre has proven inadequate for rapid emergency response.
The incidents to string of such occurrences in Nebbi district, specifically Goli one stop border point.
West Nile Police Spokesman SP Collins Asea confirmed the incident, stating:"Our officers are responding to a scene where a fuel tanker has ignited along the Pakwach-Nebbi road. Further details will be provided as they emerge."
He added, "Through this communication, the regional fire officer has been officially notified to mobilize resources.”
