Lira, Uganda: The Luo Native| Security operatives in Lira City have detained a social media blogger allegedly affiliated with Hon. Betty Amongi Akena for allegedly spreading false and alarming information about the Lira Regional Referral Hospital (LRRH).
The blogger, identified as Ayeny Angulu, has been accused of defaming the government health unit in Lira City and causing unnecessary panic among the local community accessing services at LRRH.
According to a report, Ayeny Angulu falsely claimed on social media that the hospital had abandoned dead bodies unattended, an allegation that officials have dismissed as baseless and intended to sabotage government development at the facility.
Authorities say the propaganda was a deliberate attempt to tarnish the hospital’s reputation and mislead the public.
LRRH has reassured the community that all medical and administrative services are running smoothly, and any attempts to incite fear through falsehoods will not be tolerated.
The arrest of Ayeny Angulu follows a directive from Lira City Resident Commissioner, Lawrence Egole, to the DPC to immediately arrest a blogger who posted negative information against the hospital. Egole cautioned youths against receiving little pay to frustrate competent leaders and the government.
“Our investigation revealed some people are now being paid to fight the government and leaders in NRM, but I want to castigate this kind of behavior, and as security, we shall not allow you to taint the image of the government,” he stated.
An attempt to speak to the North Kyoga Police PRO was unsuccessful; however, plans are underway to take him to court any time from now.
