Augustine Otuko, a regular political contender in Ngariam County, has officially picked up nomination forms to take part in the upcoming NRM party primaries. This move begins a new challenge to the current MP and State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang.
Speaking to reporters after collecting the forms, Otuko said he is committed to promoting leadership that listens to and serves the people of Ngariam. He spoke out against what he called increasing political threats and division, which he blamed on the current MP.
“We must stop politics that depend on fear and divide people. Ngariam needs leaders who unite and uplift the people, not leaders who spread mistrust,” said Otuko.
Talking about the 2021 general elections, Otuko pointed to problems such as vote rigging and bribing voters. He believes these issues affected the fairness of the elections.
He is hopeful that this time the NRM Secretariat has taken the right steps to stop such bad practices, which he blames on what he calls “a group of political cowards.” He stated, “We now have a digital Party Membership and Voter Register, thanks to the wise leadership of the Party Chairman and the National Secretariat. This will help make sure the primaries are open and fair.” He also called on the Party Electoral Commission to be firm and careful, especially by holding village and sub-county officials responsible for any wrong actions.
Otuko also said that the party needs to fix its internal election system so that people can trust it again. He believes that better planning and strong rules will help ensure that the elections set for July 16, 2025, truly show what the people want.
“I believe the people of Ngariam are ready for real change—change based on unity, service, and respect for democracy. We already saw this in the recent grassroots elections, where we did very well and pushed Ogwang and his allies aside,” Otuko said.
