Lira Mayor George Okello Ayo Shines As He Receives Award for Fighting Corruption

Lira, Uganda: The hard-working mayor of Lira City East Division, Honourable George Okello Ayo, has been celebrated as a leading figure in the fight against corruption. This calm and collected politician, who is part of the Uganda People’s Congress, received this award during a ceremony in Kampala that was attended by several notable leaders.
On Wednesday, December 4th, Actionaid International Uganda presented him with the National Integrity Award 2024.
During the award presentation, the team praised Mayor Okello for his crucial role in tackling corruption in Lira City East. Media reports have highlighted that this division stands out as one of the most peaceful and least corrupt areas in Uganda, largely due to Okello Ayo's effective leadership.
At Skyz Hotel in Bukoto, Kampala, dressed in his UPC red outfit, Okello Ayo happily accepted the award, receiving heartfelt congratulations from his peers. After the event, he spoke to the media, expressing his appreciation to the voters of Lira City East for their support, which has allowed him to lead effectively.
He pointed out that his achievements come from a commitment to serving the community rather than seeking personal benefits.
As an experienced leader eyeing the Lira City East Parliamentary seat in 2026, Okello emphasized that combating corruption is a collective responsibility. He urged his fellow leaders to focus on the needs of the people who elected them to improve social services in the region.
Janet Adongo, a resident of Adekokwok in Lira City, expressed her gratitude to ActionAid International Uganda for acknowledging Mayor Okello Ayo's efforts. She mentioned that such recognition inspires other politicians to enhance their leadership skills. Mayor Okello Ayo has outshined numerous leaders from across Uganda.
