LIRA - Vendors In Cuk Migera Faces Lack Of Sanitary Facilities

By Jimmy Olot
Kampala, Uganda : Women vendors in Cuk Migera, Lira District, are facing a significant shortage of proper sanitation facilities, which poses serious health risks. At the Cuk Migera mini market, a hub for travelers from Lira, Alebtong, Otuke, and Kotido, both men and women are forced to share a makeshift toilet.
In addition to the toilet issue, many of the women, who primarily sell roasted cassava and fruits, struggle with access to clean and reliable water, leading to poor hygiene. Flerence Auma shared the difficulties they endure, especially during their menstrual periods. She mentioned that the lack of privacy often forces them to share toilets with men, which is uncomfortable and concerning.
Flerence worries that these conditions could lead to health complications due to inadequate hygiene and sanitation. Although the market was initiated by a group of single mothers and widows, it has grown significantly and now serves a diverse clientele. Denis Okello, a resident of Aloi, praised the market's benefits and urged local leaders from Alebtong and Lira to step in and build proper toilet facilities.
Cuk Migera is a popular stop for travelers heading to Lira or Alebtong, with many people drawn to its affordable prices. A public health expert who spoke to us emphasized that if these sanitation issues aren't resolved, both vendors and customers will face health risks. He highlighted the need for clean sanitary facilities for women and girls and called for the construction of a modern public toilet.
Despite the market's variety of goods, the situation is alarming and requires urgent attention. For instance, there are no proper waste disposal sites, and garbage is left unattended, creating further health concerns.
