It Will Bring Catastrophic Problems to You! Gen Muhoozi Warns Teso Politicians Against Interfering in Gen Elwelu's Arrest
Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has warned politicians from the Teso sub-region against attempting to interfere in the arrest and ongoing security matters surrounding former Deputy Chief of Defence Forces Gen Peter Elwelu. Muhoozi cautioned that politicians who attempt to involve themselves in military and security operations risk facing serious consequences, insisting that such interventions would not change anything.
In a strongly worded message shared on his X account, Muhoozi said he had previously warned politicians against interfering in military and security affairs. He maintained that political pressure would have no influence on decisions taken by the security establishment and warned those considering such interventions to stay away.
"I have warned politicians in the past from even thinking of interfering in military/security matters. First of all, it will have absolutely no effect. None. Secondly, it will bring catastrophic problems on those politicians themselves," Muhoozi posted.
The warning comes amid growing political discussions in the Teso sub-region following the arrest of former Deputy Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen Peter Elwelu in Soroti City. The arrest attracted considerable attention because of Elwelu's senior military background and his connections to the eastern Uganda region.
Teso politicians had earlier appealed to President Yoweri Museveni and Gen Muhoozi to intervene and help resolve the matter. During an emergency meeting in Kampala, members of the Teso Parliamentary Group expressed concern about the situation and called for dialogue with the country's top leadership.
The legislators also raised concerns about the anxiety surrounding Elwelu's arrest, urging authorities to handle the matter fairly while calling on residents to remain calm. They reportedly sought an opportunity to engage the President and the army leadership over the developments.
However, Muhoozi's latest statement has made his position on political involvement in security matters clear. Although he did not specifically name the Teso legislators in his post, his warning comes against the backdrop of their efforts to engage the leadership over Elwelu's arrest.
The arrest of the former army commander continues to attract national attention, with developments surrounding his case being closely followed by political leaders and residents in Teso.
