Hot News : President Museveni Commissions Construction Of Akiibua memorial Studium in Lango

Lira, Uganda : The Luo Natives | President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially kicked off the construction of the Akii Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City this Wednesday.

The groundbreaking event saw the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, along with various government officials and sports figures, including state house controller, Government chief whip Denis Hamson Obua, in attendance among others.

Once finished, the stadium is set to enhance sports development in the area and pay tribute to Uganda’s first Olympic gold medalist, John Akii Bua. In her speech, Minister Janet Museveni expressed gratitude to the president for his commitment to advancing sports. She highlighted that the Akii Bua project will not only revamp the city but also improve the economic situation for locals and nurture sporting talent.

Museveni has been touring the Lango Subregion to evaluate the Parish Development Model's progress, and this stadium project is viewed as a significant infrastructure upgrade for the region. While speaking to a large audience, the President mentioned that he delayed the construction to address security concerns and other issues first. He also provided the Lango Province team with a bus at their request.

The modern facility will host 20,000 spectators and feature a main stadium, training areas, an indoor arena, a swimming pool, outdoor courts, and plenty of parking space.

The Ugandan government inked a deal for the project last June with the Egyptian company SAMCO National Construction Company. The $129 million project is expected to wrap up in about 20 months.

Lira City is poised to gain a lot from this initiative, with expected increases in tourism, job opportunities, and overall economic growth.

The Akii Bua Olympic Stadium will stand as a key facility, promoting talent development and positioning Uganda as a potential host for regional and international events.
