PLU VS NUP! PLU Cadre Steps In To Rescue Kapere Lufotose’s Family With Shs1 Million and School Bursaries After Comedian’s Death
The family of late comedian Kapere Lufotose, a known supporter of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has received a helping hand from a Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) cadre following his death. PLU Patriotic Officer Frank Mwesigye has offered Shs1 million to the comedian's widow and secured education bursaries for the children he left behind, in an intervention aimed at easing the family's burden during this difficult period.
Mwesigye revealed that his financial contribution was meant to support Kapere's widow as she adjusts to life without her husband. He appealed to anyone who knows her or is in contact with her to pass on the message that she can personally collect the Shs1 million contribution whenever it is convenient for her.
Beyond the financial support, Mwesigye also revealed that he had reached out to his fellow PLU member, Mulindwa Ryan Kibedi, who reportedly agreed to provide school bursaries for Kapere's children. Kibedi, who is a director of several schools along Gayaza Road, offered to support the children from their current classes until they complete Senior Six, ensuring that their education does not suffer because of their father's death.
The development has attracted attention because Kapere was widely associated with the opposition NUP, while the people extending support to his family belong to the PLU camp. Mwesigye used the opportunity to demonstrate that political differences should not prevent Ugandans from standing with one another, particularly when families are going through difficult moments.
However, the PLU cadre also took a swipe at NUP leaders and supporters over the contributions reportedly collected during a gathering at the party headquarters to honour their fallen supporter. Mwesigye alleged that approximately 130 people attended the gathering but collectively raised only Shs234,500, with Mathias Walukaga reportedly contributing the highest amount of Shs20,000, followed by Nubian Li with Shs5,000.
His remarks have since drawn attention to the different forms of assistance being extended to the comedian's family. While the NUP gathering was intended to pay last respects to Kapere, Mwesigye argued that more meaningful support should go towards helping the widow and children cope with the challenges left behind by his death. The figures he cited have not been independently verified.
Mwesigye thanked Kibedi for accepting to support the children's education, describing the intervention as an important step towards protecting their future. He maintained that PLU is open to all Ugandans, including opposition supporters, and that compassion, patriotism and humanity should come before political affiliation.
The intervention has also reopened conversations about how political groups and public figures support their followers during difficult times. For Kapere's family, however, the Shs1 million contribution and the promise of bursaries could provide much-needed relief, particularly for the children who now face the challenge of growing up without their father.
