President Yoweri Museveni Is the God of Uganda and Africa. Does Anyone Deny This? Senior Presidential Advisor Peace Rugambwa

Senior Presidential Advisor on Agriculture and Local People Peace Rugambwa has defended her description of President Yoweri Museveni as the “God of Uganda and Africa,” citing biblical scripture following criticism from religious leaders.

Rugambwa initially made the remarks while addressing a church gathering, where she praised Museveni’s leadership and compared him to a divine figure. “President Yoweri Museveni is the god of Uganda and Africa. Does anyone deny this? He does not see as others do,” she told the congregation.

Her comments sparked criticism on social media and from some religious leaders, including Bishop Nathan Ibrahim of Daystar Cathedral in Mbarara. Ibrahim urged church leaders across the country to reject the statement, arguing that Museveni is a president and should not be accorded divine status.

Ibrahim described Rugambwa’s remarks as contrary to Christian teachings and called on the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Catholic Cardinal and leaders of the Born Again faith to speak out. He also urged Museveni to publicly distance himself from the statement.

On October 1, 2026, Rugambwa returned to the controversy during another gathering, accusing Ibrahim of insulting her. She defended her remarks by referring to Exodus 7:1, where God tells Moses that He has made him “like God to Pharaoh,” with Aaron serving as his prophet.

Using that biblical passage to explain her position, Rugambwa said Museveni had been made the “God of Uganda and Africa.” She also described his brother, Gen Salim Saleh, and his son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as prophets tasked with fighting corruption in the country.

Rugambwa has been active in government and NRM mobilisation, particularly in western Uganda. In 2025, she mobilised support for Museveni ahead of the 2026 elections and encouraged media personalities and online content creators to promote the government's record.

She also chairs the Boona Bagigahare Nyekundire poverty alleviation initiative, which has supported traders and community groups in southwestern Uganda. The programme's registration exercise was suspended in January following a dispute with the Catholic Diocese of Kabale.
