LIRA, UGANDA — On World Teachers’ Day 2026, a political activist , Fred Obuku has paid tribute to teachers and educators around the world, while calling for urgent and sustained action to improve their working conditions and strengthen Uganda’s education system.

Obuku described teachers as central to the development of society, recognising their patience, sacrifice and commitment to nurturing future generations despite the challenges they face.

He acknowledged the difficult conditions experienced by many teachers in Uganda, including limited teaching resources, inadequate infrastructure and broader challenges within the education system.

According to Obuku, teachers deserve more than appreciation on a single day. They need better working conditions, adequate resources, professional support and policies that recognise the critical role they play in national development.

“Despite the challenges, teachers continue to show resilience and commitment to their profession. Their contribution to building the next generation cannot be underestimated,” he said.

Obuku called on .government, education authorities, political leaders, parents, communities and other stakeholders to move beyond words and take concrete action to support teachers and improve schools.

He urged policymakers to prioritise investment in education, strengthen school infrastructure, provide adequate learning materials and ensure teachers have the support and working environment necessary to deliver quality education.

He also called on communities to value and respect teachers, saying the responsibility of building a stronger education system should not rest on teachers alone.

“This is a call to action. Let us move from celebrating teachers to supporting them. Let us invest in our schools, strengthen the teaching profession and give educators the tools and conditions they need to succeed. The future of our children and our country depends on the choices we make today.”

Obuku urged teachers not to lose hope, saying their resilience and continued service remain vital to Uganda’s future.
