The Only Bad Habit Of Moses Matovu; Prince Nakibinge Tells As He Pays Tribute To The Late Singer

Prince Kassim Nakibinge has paid tribute to legendary musician Moses Matovu, recalling their long friendship and the bond they developed through their shared love for football. Nakibinge spoke at Kibuli Mosque as mourners gathered to pay their final respects to the late Afrigo Band founder.

Nakibinge said he had known Matovu for many years and that their friendship became stronger through football. He recalled spending time with the musician at Wankulukuku and Nakivubo, where they followed football matches and shared many memorable moments.

While describing Matovu’s character, Nakibinge joked that the musician had only one bad habit that he knew of — supporting SC Villa. The light-hearted comment attracted laughter from mourners gathered at the mosque.

“We’ve been friends with Moses Matovu for a while and lived together here. And we got closer because of football. We used to be together at Wankulukuku and Nakivubo,” Nakibinge said.

“And I never knew any bad habit about him apart from supporting SC Villa,” he added, referring to the long-standing rivalry between SC Villa and Express FC, of which Nakibinge is the patron.

Football was an important part of Matovu’s life alongside his celebrated music career. He played for Nakivubo Boys, Express FC and Police FC before later serving as SC Villa treasurer from 2013 to 2014 and continuing to serve the club as a trustee.

Matovu died on September 24, 2026, at the age of 77, prompting tributes from various leaders and personalities in Uganda’s music, football and cultural sectors. FUFA President Moses Magogo, Buganda Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga and UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo were among those who recognised his contribution to Uganda.

According to the burial programme announced by Afrigo Band, mourners were expected to gather at the National Theatre after prayers at Kibuli Mosque before proceeding to Kyanja for a vigil. Matovu was scheduled to be laid to rest at 4pm on September 25, 2026, at the family’s ancestral grounds in Kyanja.
