If Museveni Doesn’t Get Rid Of Corrupt People Like Otafiire, PLU Shall Cut Ties With NRM — Daudi Kabanda Warns

Head of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Chairman’s Office David Kabanda has called on President Yoweri Museveni to remove Kahinda Otafiire from government, warning that failure to do so could lead to a reconsideration of the PLU’s cooperation with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Kabanda, who is also the Kasambya County Member of Parliament, said he would ask PLU Chairman Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba to reconsider the alliance if what he described as corrupt individuals continued to hold government positions.

“If the President does not get rid of these corrupt people like Otafiire from our coalition government, we shall be forced to ask our Chairman to reconsider this coalition with NRM and start our own family,” Kabanda wrote.

He said his remarks were made in the context of the Tuko Pamoja alliance between PLU and NRM, which followed a memorandum of understanding signed ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Kabanda said Gen Kainerugaba had directed PLU supporters to back NRM candidates from the presidential level down to the village level, arguing that young people and PLU supporters played an important role in the election campaign.

He credited the groups with contributing to what he described as a historic 72 per cent victory, while noting that the NRM had recorded a similar margin in 1996.

Kabanda questioned why some long-serving members of the Movement, including Otafiire, had allegedly failed to recognise the contribution of young people and PLU supporters. He also argued that the fight against corruption was an important part of the cooperation between PLU and NRM.

However, Kabanda stressed that his comments represented his personal position and did not amount to a formal decision by PLU to withdraw from its cooperation with NRM. His remarks nonetheless put renewed focus on the relationship between the two groups and the role of younger political actors within the ruling political establishment.
