Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has claimed that he was not personally responsible for the capture of opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye, saying he believes God was behind the arrest.
In a post on X, Gen Muhoozi said Besigye was captured by God because he allegedly insulted what he described as God’s “Mighty Army” and plotted to kill “God’s Anointed King.”
“I did not capture Besigye. It was God Himself. He did it because Besigye insulted His Mighty Army and plotted to kill God’s Anointed King. He will not escape his punishment,” Muhoozi wrote.
Muhoozi’s remarks come amid the ongoing legal proceedings involving Besigye, who has been facing charges in Uganda. The former presidential candidate has denied allegations against him and has challenged the case against him.
The CDF’s statement also comes against the background of his repeated public comments about Besigye and the security agencies involved in the case. His latest remarks frame Besigye’s arrest in religious terms rather than as an action personally carried out by Muhoozi.
Besigye has been a prominent opposition figure in Uganda for decades and has previously contested presidential elections against President Yoweri Museveni.
