Gender, Labour and Social Development Minister Gen Henry Tumukunde has dismissed a long-standing claim that he is the brother of First Lady Janet Museveni, describing it as a false rumour that has followed him for years.
Tumukunde addressed the claim during the Sam Kalega Njuba Memorial Lecture organised by the Uganda Law Society. He said the rumour became so widespread that it even affected his political campaigns and influenced how some people viewed him.
The retired army general recalled an incident during his 2021 presidential campaign in Lango, where former Dokolo Woman MP Cecilia Ogwal had invited him to meet prominent leaders from the sub-region. Tumukunde said he believed the meeting had gone well until one participant raised the issue of his alleged relationship with Janet Museveni.
He said the person questioned why people in Lango should support him if he was allegedly Janet Museveni’s brother. Tumukunde said the claim surprised him because he believed such a close family relationship with a prominent public figure could not remain unknown.
