Don't Make People Fear You, Make Them Love You — Ofwono Opondo Advises Gen Muhoozi
Former government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo has urged Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba to seek the affection and respect of Ugandans rather than allowing himself to become a figure people fear.
Opondo made the remarks in a recent opinion piece in which he discussed Gen Kahinda Otafiire's intervention in Parliament and the wider concerns surrounding Uganda's political and security environment.
According to Opondo, Otafiire's remarks in Parliament were understood by many listeners as a warning about issues including alleged abductions, disappearances and the detention of civilians at military facilities. He said these matters could eventually receive further discussion in Parliament.
Opondo also raised concerns about Muhoozi's reported involvement in partisan politics while serving as an active-duty military officer. He argued that the CDF should address the allegations surrounding his conduct in order to protect his personal reputation as well as the image of the UPDF and government.
The former government spokesperson further warned about what he described as growing public concern over Muhoozi's reported political ambitions and the activities of some of his supporters.
Opondo specifically called on Muhoozi to restrain supporters of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) from engaging in what he described as intolerance, arguing that political movements should avoid actions that could deepen divisions in the country.
He then delivered his central message directly to Muhoozi, saying that it is better for a leader to be voluntarily liked, appreciated and loved than to be feared. Opondo also advised him to control individuals who may be acting aggressively in his name.
The remarks add to Opondo's previous public commentary on Muhoozi and come amid renewed debate about the CDF's role in Uganda's political affairs and the direction of the PLU.
