Best Kemigisa’s Queen Mother Title Ends With The Death Of King Oyo

The death of Tooro King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV has brought a major change to the life of his mother, Best Kemigisa, as her official position as Queen Mother came to an end with the death of her son.

King Oyo died on August 27, 2026, bringing to an end a reign that lasted more than three decades. He became King of Tooro in 1995 at the age of only three, following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.

According to Rev. Fr. Dr Charles Oyo, spokesman for the Babiito Clan, the position of Queen Mother is connected to the reigning king. He explained that when the Omukama dies, his mother ceases to hold the formal palace position of Queen Mother.

This means that Best Kemigisa, who spent most of her adult life as the mother of Tooro’s reigning monarch, no longer holds the official Queen Mother position following the death of King Oyo.

Kemigisa became Queen Mother when her young son ascended the throne in 1995. Because Oyo was only three years old at the time, her role became particularly significant during the early years of his reign.

For more than 30 years, Kemigisa remained one of the most visible figures in the Tooro royal household. She witnessed her son grow from a young king into an adult monarch who had spent decades on the throne.
