I Just Got 1.2 Billion Not 10 Billion; Gen Sejusa Breaks His Silence On Disappointing Retirement Package After 50 Years Of Service

Retired General David Sejusa has revealed that he received Shs1.2 billion as his entire retirement package after 46 years of service in Uganda’s security services, dismissing reports that he received Shs10 billion.

Sejusa made the revelation on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, while responding to a social media user who claimed that his retirement package amounted to Shs10 billion. He said the figure was wrong and disclosed that his total package, including pension, was Shs1.2 billion.

The former Coordinator of Intelligence Services said the Shs1.2 billion was paid as a one-off amount. He challenged anyone who doubted his statement to check the relevant records at the Ministries of Defence and Finance.

Sejusa also complained that retired soldiers do not enjoy some of the benefits given to senior civilian public servants after retirement. He cited medical cover, vehicles, housing and furniture as some of the benefits he said were unavailable to retired military officers.

The retired general further claimed that some senior civilian retirees and judges are taken abroad for medical treatment, while retired soldiers do not receive similar support. He added that some soldiers who served alongside him for decades retired with even less money.

Sejusa formally retired from the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces on August 31, 2022, during a ceremony presided over by President Yoweri Museveni at State House, Entebbe. He was among 48 generals who retired under Batch 12 after long careers in the military.

His military career included several senior positions, including serving as an army representative in Parliament, State Minister for Defence and Coordinator of Intelligence Services. He joined the armed struggle that brought Museveni to power in 1986 and eventually rose to the rank of four-star general.

Sejusa’s retirement followed a long and difficult process that included legal battles over his request to leave the army. In 2016, the High Court awarded him Shs750 million in damages and ordered payment of salary arrears and retirement benefits, but the Court of Appeal later overturned the decision. He eventually signed his retirement documents in May 2022, with his retirement taking effect in August of the same year.
