Kampala, Uganda ;The Woman Member of Parliament for Mbale City, Lydia Wanyoto Mutende, has announced an intensive mobilisation campaign for the upcoming Speakership race, shortly after being sworn into office today at Parliament in Kampala. Her declaration marks a significant step in the race for the top parliamentary seat, which is expected to ignite active political discussions among legislators.

Next week, Parliament of Uganda will elect the speaker of the 12th Parliament, currently the incumbent, Hon. Annite Among is seeking to retain her position amid tough contest.

Speaking to after the swearing-in ceremony, Wanyoto expressed her commitment to rally support from Members of Parliament (MPs) across Uganda. She emphasized that her extensive leadership experience, dedication to national unity, and focus on parliamentary development position her as a strong contender capable of effectively steering Parliament's agenda.

"I am ready to engage with my colleagues and supporters nationwide to ensure a collective effort towards electing a leadership that prioritizes inclusivity, transparency, and good governance," Wanyoto stated. She further called upon legislators and her supporters to join her mobilisation efforts, underscoring the importance of inclusive leadership and strengthened parliamentary oversight.

Her declaration is expected to heighten political activity within Parliament as candidates position themselves for the Speakership race, which is anticipated to be highly competitive. Political analysts suggest that Wanyoto is gaining favor among MPs and is likely to be a strong contender against other prominent candidates in the race.

Who is Lydia Wanyoto?

Lydia Wanyoto Mutende is a distinguished Ugandan lawyer, politician, and diplomat with a notable career spanning various high-profile roles. She has served as the Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (DSRCC), based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In this capacity, she contributed to key African Union initiatives aimed at peacekeeping and continental integration.

Additionally, Wanyoto temporarily served as Head of the African Union Mission to Ethiopia and the African Union Peace and Security Council in 2014. Her diplomatic experience and leadership in regional peace efforts have earned her recognition across Africa.

With her extensive background in governance, diplomacy, and leadership, Lydia Wanyoto is seen by many as a formidable candidate for the Speakership position, promising to bring stability and progressive reforms to Parliament if elected.
