NRM RACE: Dr. Aceng Crowned Unopposed Lira City NRM Chair As Great Influential Businessmen Takes Major Roles

Lira City, Uganda: The leadership of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party in Lira City has recently been reshaped, with prominent businessmen from the region dominating the party's key positions. Political analysts describe this development as a positive shift towards economic and developmental growth, signaling a new direction for the party in the region.

The elections which took place at Ambala Primary School in Lira City, successful and influential businesspeople, many whom many have contributed to the region’s economic development secured major leadership roles within NRM.

 This new leadership reflects a trend of business elites taking on political responsibilities, aiming to leverage their expertise for regional progress.

Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, the current Woman Member of Parliament for Lira City, was crowned unopposed as the new Chairperson of NRM in Lira as where went unchallenged. 

 Many other influential businessmen, due to their extensive connections and mobilization capacity, contested unopposed, emphasizing their strong support base.

For example: Tycoon Johnson Ochol was elected unopposed as Vice Chairperson of NRM in Lira City, Eryo Geoffrey, proprietor of Good Lord Hardware, was also elected Vice Chairman of the NRM Entrepreneur League, with the league’s chairperson, Mr. Oliam Pius, owner of Champion Wine, also elected unopposed.

-Other elected leaders include Ayena Sajapa and Ojore, Tonny Alex Ogwal aka Alexis of Alexis Agro, a prominent agro dealer in Lira became the chair of NRM Lira City East Division among others.

During her address, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, the new NRM chairperson for Lira City urged the newly elected leaders to foster unity within the party and to avoid supporting opposition candidates against NRM nominees. 

She emphasized that any leader found secretly undermining the party would face disciplinary measures, including removal from leadership positions.

“I am grateful for the trust you have placed in me as the Chairperson of NRM in Lira,” Dr. Aceng stated. “As Chair, I now have the authority to convene meetings to discuss party affairs and implement programs. Our focus will be on rebuilding the party, strengthening unity, and promoting peace across the region.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Morris Chris Ongom, the newly elected Secretary General of NRM in Lira Ciry and Director of the Lango Chamber of Commerce, expressed appreciation to party delegates for their support. Ongom highlighted that the elected leadership is composed of individuals with diverse expertise, which will be instrumental in advancing development and the party’s ideology.

He assured that efforts are underway to ensure all NRM candidates succeed in the upcoming national elections. Ongom also announced plans to establish various committees, including disciplinary and development committees, to enhance internal governance and promote effective leadership.

This election outcome aligns with the broader trend of business leaders playing pivotal roles in Ugandan politics, especially within the NRM. Historically, the party has emphasized development and economic growth, and the current leadership's composition suggests a strategic move to incorporate economic expertise into political decision-making.

 Experts believe that this integration could accelerate regional development initiatives, improve service delivery, and bolster the party’s electoral prospects in upcoming national polls.

The successful elections of these influential figures are seen as a testament to their strong mobilization capacity and deep-rooted connections within the community, which could translate into increased political stability and development momentum for Lira City and the broader Lango sub-region.
