Shock! Mystery Deepens as Rwandan President Kagame’s Critic Robert Kabera Is Found Dead, Beheaded in Uganda
Shock and uncertainty have surrounded the reported death of Robert Kabera, a former Rwandan soldier and musician who became a vocal critic of President Paul Kagame’s government. Kabera, popularly known as Sergeant Robert, was reportedly found dead at a construction site in Kamengo, Mpigi District, on Saturday, October 17, 2026, in an incident that has raised serious questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to reports, Kabera’s body was discovered near a house he was constructing, with disturbing accounts alleging that his head was missing. Preliminary accounts suggest that he may have spent the night at the site before being attacked by unidentified individuals. However, the full circumstances of the incident, including the exact sequence of events and the identities of those responsible, remain unclear.
The reported killing has prompted questions about who last saw Kabera alive, whether he had received threats before his death and what could have happened at the construction site. At the time of the initial reports, Ugandan police had not publicly established a motive or identified suspects in connection with the incident, leaving several unanswered questions as investigations are awaited.
Kabera previously served in the Rwanda Defence Force, where he reportedly worked as a military instructor and musician. In November 2020, he fled Rwanda for Uganda alongside his wife, claiming that he feared for his safety. The Rwandan military later described him as a fugitive and said he was under investigation over allegations of sexual assault, which he denied, insisting that the accusations were politically motivated.
After settling in Uganda, Kabera became increasingly outspoken about the Rwandan government, using music and public commentary to express his views on human rights and the need for unity among Rwandans. His transition from a military serviceman to a critic of the government placed him among the voices challenging the leadership of President Kagame, although it remains unproven whether his political views had any connection to his reported death.
Kabera had previously attracted the attention of Ugandan security authorities. In May 2022, he was reportedly arrested during an operation at his residence over allegations of unlawful possession of a firearm before being released on police bond. However, no established evidence has linked that incident to the circumstances surrounding his death, and any connection would require further investigation.
The Rwanda National Congress (RNC), an opposition organisation critical of Kagame’s administration, has called for a thorough investigation into Kabera’s death. The organisation has expressed concern about the safety of Rwandan government critics living in exile and urged Ugandan authorities and relevant international bodies to establish the truth. Although concerns about a possible political motive have emerged, no independent evidence has established that the killing was politically connected.
As investigations into the reported death are awaited, Kabera’s case leaves behind troubling questions about the events leading to his final moments in Uganda. Forensic examinations, witness statements and other evidence will be crucial in determining how he died, who was responsible and whether his outspoken political activities played any role. Until the facts are established, the motive behind the reported killing remains unknown.
