Kampala, Uganda: The parliamentary race in Apac Municipality is undergoing a dramatic shift as internal conflicts in Opposition creates an opening for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to take over.

The UPC, which has held the seat since the municipality's creation, is fractured by a public battle between its former flag bearer, Patrick Ocan (now running as an Independent), and senior party mobilizer Maxwell Akora.

Amid this discord, NRM candidate Nekyon Isaac Odongo is rapidly consolidating broad support, positioning himself as the frontrunner with a clear, transformative agenda. A recent survey and voter interactions indicate a growing desire for a unified candidate focused on development rather than internal party disputes like NRM Odongo.

Voters Seek Fresh Ideas Amid Stalemate

Residents expressed frustration with the ongoing in Opposition in Apac alledging that other opposition candidates are just attacking each other without unveiling their political agenda," stated one voter, a sentiment echoed by many. Denis Okello, a municipal voter, added, "Supporting the two rival opposition candidates is now not good because they treat you as an enemy. We are looking for neutral grounds and candidate.

This disillusionment is driving supporters toward Odongo, who is seen as offering "new energy, fresh blood, and a clear vision." Notably, reports indicate that even at traditional UPC strongholds like Te-Mogo, opposition supporters have joined his camp and are now swearing to give vote to NRM him and President Museveni.

Speaking after a weekend rally, candidate Nekyon Isaac Odongo expressed strong confidence in securing victory. "Much as the area is a UPC stronghold, the voters have now resolved to look beyond party and vote for the quality of a candidate, which makes me the potential winner in this race," he said.

Odongo attributed his rising support to a clear agenda focused on direct community benefits and effective lobbying with the central government.

Preaching the gospel of protecting the gains, NRM Odongo further praised people of Apac for the love they show to President Museveni during his campaign trail in Lango sub-region urging them on the 15th of January 2026 to translate the love into vote for Museveni and him for a better tomorrow.

Odongo unveiled his transformative agenda for the people of Apac Municipal which includes economic empowerment, improving state of health facilities,  schools and addressing unemployment through skilling the youths.

The political transformation is occurring against a backdrop of significant government-funded development in Apac Municipality, such as the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) project. These visible improvements, including paved roads and street lighting, are reshaping the local landscape and strengthening the appeal of the ruling NRM's message.

With the campaign intensifying, the possibility of UPC losing its historical stronghold is higher than ever. The party's internal divisions, contrasted with the NRM's united front and project-based campaigning, have made the Apac Municipal parliamentary seat a highly competitive contest.
