Just In; Victoria School of Nursing & Midwifery-Lira CEO Encourages Healthcare Workers to Honor Martyrs’ Sacrifice Through Compassionate Care

Lira, Uganda – In a heartfelt message to Christians celebrating Martyrs’ Day at Namugongo on June 3, 2026, the CEO of Victoria School of Nursing and Midwifery, Dr. Isaac Orec urged believers to remain united in faith and resilient in the face of challenges. His appeal came amid strict government restrictions on public gatherings imposed to curb the spread of Ebola.

“Although circumstances prevent us from gathering in large numbers, we remain committed to honoring the sacrifices of our martyrs and celebrating our faith safely,” Dr. Orec said. He encouraged the public to adhere to all health guidelines while finding innovative ways to commemorate the historic day, including virtual services and small family-based prayers.

Authorities have enforced stringent measures at the Namugongo Martyrs’ Shrine, including limited attendance, mandatory temperature checks, hand sanitizing, and social distancing protocols. As of early June 2026, Uganda has reported confirmed Ebola cases, prompting the Ministry of Health to advise against large religious congregations at Namugongo shrines.

Despite these challenges, the spirit of the celebrations remains strong, with many Christians observing the day in creative and safe ways.

Martyrs’ Day honors the Uganda Martyrs – 23 Anglican and 22 Catholic converts who were executed between 1885 and 1887 on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II for refusing to renounce their faith. This year’s observance is more subdued due to the health crisis, but the significance of the day continues to inspire millions across Uganda and beyond.

Across the country, Christians are gathering at their local churches to join the central celebrations at Namugongo via live broadcasts. In Lango sub‑region, Lira Cathedral Catholic Church organized a prayer service that attracted many believers, who faithfully followed the health guidelines.

Dr. Orec  also called on practicing health workers and students to honor the sacrifices of the martyrs by performing their duties professionally and dedicating themselves to saving lives through quality healthcare.

In a related development, Dr. Orec reminded the public about ongoing admission programs at Victoria School of Nursing and Midwifery for the July 2026 intake. The school, located in Lira City, is currently accepting applications for the following programmes:

· Certificate in Midwifery

· Diploma in Nursing Extension

· Diploma in Midwifery Extension
