DISABLED REGAIN FREEDOM As Hon. Dr. Alyek Judith Distributes Wheel Chairs In Kole
KOLE, UGANDA: PERSONS with disabilities (PWDs) in Kole District have received mobility tricycles from Serve Uganda to restore their independence and dignity.
Speaking at the launch in Alito Sub-county, former Kole District Woman MP Hon. Dr. Judith Alyek also CEO Serve Uganda condemned the widespread marginalization of PWDs.
She noted that many children have been forced out of school due to transport challenges, relying entirely on caregivers to carry them. Beneficiaries shared painful experiences of social rejection and severely restricted mobility.
Meanwhile, Future Net Uganda Executive Director Mongo urged community leaders to stop demonizing PWDs and called on the government to strengthen support for civil society groups through official accreditation. She advised beneficiaries to use the tricycles responsibly to establish active economic livelihoods.
The intervention addresses a critical regional gap. The latest data published in the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) National Census report reveals that Uganda is home to 5.5 million PWDs, accounting for 13.2% of the total population. Worryingly, the Lango Sub-region recorded the highest disability prevalence in the country at 17.4%, contrasting sharply with areas like Kampala at just 8.5%.
This stark demographic reality follows the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development's rollout of a five-year National Rehabilitation Plan aimed at expanding assistive technology access across Uganda. Stakeholders emphasize that the high figures in Northern Uganda demand immediate, targeted government funding to adequately resolve deep-rooted mobility and educational exclusion.
44 wheelchairs were donated to both young and adult
